Each August 15th, on the feast of the Assumption of Mary, the setting sun shines through the round ocular window above the front door to Mission Concepción, casting a beam of light which travels across the wooden pews and passes directly under the center of the dome at 6:30 pm. Meanwhile, a second beam of light passes through the west window in the raised drum on which the dome rests, casting a beam of light directly above the portrait of the Assumption of Mary hung on the wall behind the altar.

Matachines gather for a blessing from Father David Garcia. Matachines gather each December at Mission Concepción in honor of two important dates in the Catholic Calendar that honor Mary, to whom the Mission is dedicated: the Feast of the Annunciation and the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Each group of Matachines represents a parish from the Archdiocese of San Antonio and each group creates their own costumes and special dance to honor Mary. They begin with a blessing, then after a procession to the river, they return to the Mission to enter the church one group at a time to perform their dance of homage.
