World War I
Twenty years before World War I embroiled the U. S. in international politics and called on the people of Dallas County to help, the Spanish-American War offered a taste of the future. The U. S. declared war on Spain after the sinking of the Maine in Havana harbor in 1898. Several Dallas companies formed to fight in Cuba, including the Dallas Zoaves and the Trezevant Rifles.
