In 1940 North American Aviation opened a facility in Grand Prairie to build B-24 Liberator bombers and P-51 Mustang fighter planes. It employed almost 40,000 people working in shifts around the clock.

Life on the Homefront
The people of Dallas County supported the war effort in various ways. Several military manufacturing facilities were built in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and people poured into the cities to work in them. People also followed restrictions on the purchase of food, gasoline and even silk stockings, so that the military forces would have adequate supplies.
