Religion

By the 1920s, the number and size of churches in the county had grown far beyond the humble frontier examples. Christian churches represented a wider variety of denominations and synagogues had grown, though Protestantism still dominated. Many religious institutions were led by men who were revered by their congregations and took an active part in the community. These included the Rev George Truett of First Baptist, Rabbi David Lefkowitz of Temple Emanu-El, and the Rev. Alexander Jackson and his son, the Rev. Maynard Jackson, of New Hope Baptist.
