Although high school and college sports continued to attract audiences throughout Dallas County after 1945, professional sports teams dominated. One exception was SMU’s football team of the late 1940s, when Doak Walker drew fans to the Cotton Bowl. His popularity led to the expansion of the seating capacity and to calling the stadium’s postwar form “the house that Doak built.”
