Sarah Horton Cockrell worked with her husband Alexander to build a multifaceted business in the mid 1800s. Due to Alexander's untimely death, Sarah took over the entire operation and expanded it to include ownership in mills, real estate and sold stock to build a new steel bridge across the Trinity River.
